He is studying Economic and Political Development with a specialization in International Conflict Resolution (ICR). As a five-year student between Columbia College and SIPA, Mark will be graduating in May 2018. Before SIPA, Mark worked at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations during the annual sessions of the UN General Assembly. Prior to that, he also worked for a major U.S. airline, and most recently gained experience in the maritime shipping industry. What were you doing before you came to SIPA? Before SIPA, I was an undergraduate at Columbia College, majoring in Political Science. During my junior and senior years, I was working at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations for the duration of the annual sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. I briefly interned with NYC Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal, and I spent my summers working for a major U.S. airline at JFK International Airport. What attracted you to SIPA and Columbia University? The Five-Year program was one of my primary motivations when I applied to Columbia. The scope of schools to which I was applying was fairly small, and one of my high school teachers encouraged me to apply to Columbia. I read about this opportunity for undergraduates to pursue graduate study during their four years, finishing their Masterâs degree after five years. Furthermore, I knew New York would be brimming full of opportunities, whether cultural, professional, or just pure fun, all of which would teach me a lot about how the world works. Like many current Columbia students, however, I didnât think I would get in; by chance and luck, I arrived on campus in August 2013. How did you find the core curriculum at SIPA? Love Core! The Core Curriculum is a quintessential part of the Columbia experience. This school invented Core. Every school within the university has some derivative of the Core. These arenât gen-ed classes that you choose off a list to fulfill a requisite. The Core classes are specific classes almost everyone in a program takes. You know that every Master of International Affairs student watched the lively debates of a Conceptual Foundations lecture, and every Master of Public Administration sat through Politics of Policymaking. I was by no means an advocate of the Core when I came to Columbia; I didnât even know I had a set of courses I had to take. After four, going on five, years of this place, Iâve come to appreciate the Core, a fundamental and time-honored academic tradition that links each and every SIPA student. Do you feel like you have gotten to know some of the faculty members? For sure! In fact, I used to run into many faculty members while working at the UN! Iâd catch Professor Jean Krasno sitting in a lobby or coffee shop chatting about the prospects of a female Secretary-General. My former colleague from the U.S. Mission, Walter Miller, was recently here leading SIPA students on their Capstone Projects on Peacebuilding in the Middle East. Iâve also had the pleasure of learning from Prof. Edward Luck and Richard Gowan, both of who are esteemed practitioners in the field of Conflict Resolution and Mediation. Iâll be reading an article and their names would suddenly pop-up, likely speaking from their offices right upstairs in IAB. SIPA features lots of events for students to attend. Is there any interesting presentation that you have attended that you could comment upon? The World Leaders Forum is an amazing opportunity to hear and learn from international heads of state in town for the annual UN General Assembly. I make it a point to attend at least one speech in each yearâs series. Have you taken classes at other Columbia Schools? Something I highly encourage students to do is to take courses outside SIPA. While SIPA has tremendous resources, taking advantage of the Columbia University community at-large ensures getting the most out of oneâs two years on-campus. My first class at SIPA was a joint SIPA-Columbia Law School class. Taking classes outside of SIPA allows students to gain new insights and perspectives from peers with different understandings, priorities, and concerns; our shared challenge is to find the best common solution. What advice do you have for current applicants? When writing your application materials, tell us a story. We know what you did, where you worked, and what you studied; tell us why you did the amazing things you accomplished. What drove you? What did you learn? Where did you fail? All of this started from two little girls and a bacteria in the bread that affected the brain. This all started on January 20,1692 when nine-year-old Elizabeth Parris and eleven-year-old Abigail Williams started to exhibit strange behavior. An information system is the heart of any organization to assess the companies past reviewââ¬â¢s and performance and to plan the present and future organizational objectives. Information system uses the database to store large amounts of data, statically analyzing the data, and to produce it in to useful information that can be used by various levels of management. Information system is used by the managers of their own departments to identify the critical issues occurred in the past activities, discussing about the issue with the other team members of the department and planned to solve and overcome the problems. Managing information systems in Sainsburyââ¬â¢s stores: Sainsburyââ¬â¢s supermarket is the ukââ¬â¢s largest major food retailing chain. It has 525 supermarkets and 303 convenience stores, a Sainsburyââ¬â¢s bank. For the big corporate organization like Sainsburyââ¬â¢s, it is essential requirement to managing information systems in an efficient way. Information systems is used in Sainsburyââ¬â¢s at various levels of management and various departments. The information systems are used in a supermarket stores at various levels from stock handling controlling to maintain appropriate temperatures in fridges and freezers. In the supermarket stores uses the several computer systems which can be called LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK). These computer systems are aims to operate the stock control and checkout systems. These are one that incorporates the functionality of multiple devices. Every authorised person can access these data base systems. In stores, hand held devices are introduced and allow the administration staff, shop floor colleagues and stock control staff to change the price of products and creating price labels, and for future deliveries. The hand held devices are also called shelf edge computers (SEC). Every individual product has unique code to identify the product details; the item has a unique barcode which can be scan by the hand held scanners. Electronic point of sale (EPOS) is a machine located at every checkout. EPOS co ntains a digital display to display , a keyboard, a scanner which can read bar codes, a set of scales, a printer, a debit card reader and a till drawer. All of these components are attached to a till. Each and every item should have a unique code number that is independent of all other product. Even the same product of different sizes needs a unique code to identify the product. The unique bar code numbers are printed on the outside of the product packaging or attached label to that product which is shown in the figure (a) below. After all it charges the customer appropriately. Each card mentioned above also has barcode on it, and the machine identifies it uniquely. All till machines are connected together with a branch server system via cables. Each and every product information stored in the branch system, it gives the information to tills when it needed. When scanning an item by the scanner the machine sends the product details to the database. So that the server system can identify that how many remaining items of the same product are available in shelves, it gets the information about that particular product such as how many number of items are sold out, how many are left in the shelves, how many product details are totally sold out . After getting the information about all products it stores the information about that product in the database. It helps to identify the number of product are totally sold out, and in out of stock. So the store can order the delivery of that product. Also the system checks that the product has any special offer and it gives discount where it is needed. Each and every product and service related details are stored in the database and it communicates with all the other systems including tills, it exchanges the information at all the times. When scanning the item it tells the customer that it has been read correctly by giving beep sound. If it not gives any sound one can assume that it has not been read correctly. Responsibility of setting the morale of any organisation lies with management and the responsibility to maintain those lies with the employees. Legal requirements that are associated with the rules and regulation of are competition, selective disclosure, proprietary information and health and safety. Commitment to excellence is a necessary ethical code for any business. An organisation consisting of more excellent employees progresses fast. Leadership skill is necessary to discover the excellence[18]. People must accept their responsibilities according to their positions so they can create ethical role models. Lastly, accountability for own decisions and work is another general ethical code that can be described as a code of ethics[19]. A person should always acknowledge his or her works and its consequences, good or bad. Apart from that, accountability is also related with the policies developed by the management of any organisation. Employment and organisational behaviour is closely related with conflicts. Any kind of conflict at workplace effectively reduces the productivity of an individual or an organisation[20]. It corrupts the work environment and creates dispute among employees and manager. From this concept, another ethical code can be discussed which is avoiding conflicts. Less the number of conflicts inside an organisation, more the employees are determined and pleased with their work. Consequences of Poor Application of Ethical Codes: Improper application of codes of ethics leads an organisation or any individual to severe consequences. These consequences can have short or long effects. Unethical works result in many legal and social issues[21]. Breakdown of integrity immediately causes a big loss in a business. Therefore a business needs to be protected from unethical issues. This can be done preparing effective management plan. Reasons behind poor application of ethical codes or unethical behaviour are many. These are excessive workloads, huge stress in work, poor management, personal grudge and many more[22]. There are many effects that caused by the non-conduction of ethical codes. Primary effect is a decrease in productivity of any organisation or any individual[23]. Unethical behaviours reduce the depth and integrity in employee relation. It also affects the relationship between a customer and an organisation. Reputation of an organisation or an individual is also affected along with the productivity. Managers of any organisation lose the respect of the employees which affects the work-force of any organisation[24]. An organisation loses its reputation as well as credibility in the market and it loses its position in the competition. The trusts of customers break rapidly with the increase of unethical issues in an organisation. Many severe legal issues with penalties and punishments are the direct resul ts of improper implementation of ethical codes. Performance of any organisation depends on the proper implication of the ethical codes. Any unethical issue inside the organisation reduces its productivity as well as its reputation. Improper implementation of ethical codes, moreover the disregards of employees in following the codes of conducts develop several disputes which can result in a collapse of the business of the organisation.
